Reggie Smith knows the road to success
Reggie Smith created The Reggie Smith Foundation on the principles he credits to his own success, supporting student athletes both as a coach and as a mentor, and passing his wisdom along to the next generation.
Reggie values the enrichment of both body and mind. The principles that guided him on his own path are the same he instills in the student athletes he mentors. He challenges those his foundation serves to rise to challenges they face, both athletically and academically, requiring all participants to maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or better. His philosophy of discipline, motivation, perseverance, and the value of education drive his foundation's mission.
“There is no success without dedication, no victory that comes without hard work. Each and every student athlete has the potential to thrive equally on the field and in the classroom. Our job as mentors is to give them the support to allow them to forge their own success.”
Reggie’s career
A seven-time Major League All Star and Gold Glove winner, Reggie was originally signed by the Minnesota Twins, and went on to play for the Boston Red Sox, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Dodgers, and the San Francisco Giants. Reggie played in four World Series, winning in 1981 with the Dodgers. His 314 career home runs placed him second on the switch-hitters list when he retired as a player.
Reggie enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a coach and teacher. He has worked with the Dodgers as their hitting instructor and first base coach. He was instrumental in the development of several Dodger Rookies of the Year, including Hall of Famer, Mike Piazza. In 1999 he helped coach Team USA to a Silver Medal in the Pan American Games. That team went on to take the Gold Medal in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, with Reggie as their hitting coach.
Today, Reggie consults with Major League Baseball organizations, offers private and small-group instruction for players of all levels, as well as trains and certifies coaches for various amateur and school baseball leagues from around the world.
